How we calculate rolls

We adjust the drop length to the next pattern-repeat multiple, work out how many complete drops fit in each roll and how many are needed around the room with margin.

What pattern repeat means

It is the distance before the design repeats. Matching the pattern can require a longer cut than the actual wall height.

Why the estimate is conservative

Doors and windows reduce net area but often do not remove an entire wallpaper drop. Extra material from the same batch is safer.

Why wallpaper is calculated by drops, not only by area

Wallpaper is sold in rolls, but it is installed as full vertical drops. That is why a simple wall-area calculation can underestimate how many rolls you need, especially when the pattern must line up between adjacent strips.

Pattern repeat changes the usable length of a roll

If the design repeats every fixed distance, each drop may need to be cut longer than the wall height so the pattern aligns. That can reduce the number of complete drops available from one roll. Offset matches can create additional waste.

Doors and windows do not always save a full strip

Openings reduce net wall area, but a window in the middle of a wall may still require a full drop above and below or a strip that is cut around the opening. This calculator therefore uses a conservative full-drop method rather than dividing net square metres by roll coverage.

Before ordering

Check the exact roll width, length and pattern-match symbol on the label.
Measure wall height in more than one place if floors or ceilings are uneven.
Order enough rolls from the same batch or dye lot.
Keep a margin for damaged strips, complex corners and future repairs.
