Start with the perimeter

For a rectangle, perimeter is 2 × (length + width). For irregular rooms, measure each wall section separately.

Subtract only real gaps

Doorways normally remove a length of skirting, but built-in furniture or radiators do not always do so. Measure the actual installation line.

Corners create waste

Mitred corners and joint positions mean an offcut of the correct length may still be unusable. Allow more waste in rooms with many corners.
