The room perimeter tells you the net length required, but skirting board is sold in fixed-length pieces. Cuts at corners, doors and awkward junctions mean the mathematical leftover is not always reusable.
Door openings are the most obvious deductions, but built-in furniture, full-height panels or other fixed elements may also change the installed length. Measure the real perimeter path rather than relying only on room width and length when the layout is irregular.
Long straight runs are efficient. Rooms with many corners, columns or short returns can create more offcuts, so a higher waste allowance may be sensible. Keep a spare piece for future repairs if the finish may be difficult to match later.
