How to choose a laser distance meter for home and renovation work
Compare laser distance meters by accuracy, repeatability, measuring reference, useful functions and real indoor range before paying for specifications you may not use.

- For most rooms, 40–50 m of range is already generous.
- Repeat important measurements and check the reference point used by the meter.
- Area, volume, memory and continuous measurement can save time during renovation work.
Prioritise accuracy and repeatability
Read the manufacturer’s accuracy specification, then test the device over a known distance. Several measurements from the same position should be consistent. A high maximum range is not useful if short indoor measurements are unstable.
Choose functions you will actually use
Area and volume calculations are useful for paint, flooring and room sizing. Memory reduces transcription errors, while front/rear reference selection helps when measuring from corners or edges.
Know what creates bad readings
Glass, glossy surfaces, very dark targets, strong ambient light and measuring at an angle can make the laser harder to read. Support the meter firmly and repeat measurements that affect material quantities.
Keep a tape measure as well
Laser meters are excellent for room dimensions, long walls and heights. A tape is still easier for short, irregular or obstructed measurements. For home renovation, the combination is usually more useful than buying the longest-range device.
